I like telling stories to make my point, so here’s a good one for you today 🙂
I had a wonderful and productive week visiting family and friends in Georgia. The other day, I went out and played a round of golf with one of my best friends, Tish Henderson.
While at dinner with the wife, Tish challenged me to a game of golf and yacked all night long about how bad she’d beat me.
Not one to back down from a challenge, I agreed to play. Which immediately after, I too, joined in the taunting of how bad I would defeat her.
As the night went on, I got more and more excited about playing golf the next morning.
I couldn’t sleep – I even daydreamed about how bad I was going to beat her.
Later that night, I started telling my kids how I was going to send ‘Ms. Tish’ back home crying – even they started rooting for me…
“Yeah… Daddy gonna beat Ms Tish’.
I know – it’s pathetic… But I loved every minute of it.
Now, I haven’t picked up a set of golf clubs in nearly 7 years – and prior to that, I wasn’t even that good. My cousin and I taught ourselves how to play, and we eventually got a few lessons from a golf pro.
But that only made us more dangerous on the golf course because we thought we were good.
Nonetheless, I was still excited.
The next day finally arrived. I picked Tish up, stopped to get some lunch, and headed to the golf course for my day of victory.
Now… I’m not going to bore you with all the details… A lot of my friends say I’m too long-winded, lol.
Needless to say, I got beat pretty, pretty bad.
YEP … She beat me by probably 20-strokes – I don’t remember (and it’s not all that important anyway, lol). All you need to know is that she won.
But worse than that, I had to go back home and face the kids who were high-fiving me on my way out the door earlier to go play golf course.
My kids anxiously awaited my arrival as I approached my parents driveway to find out who won. Even the ole’ wife couldn’t wait for me to get through the door before asking, ‘who won???’
I had to tell them I got beat…
They all laughed of course, but oh well. Sometimes you win some, and sometimes you lose. In my own defense, I haven’t touched a set of golf clubs in 7 years.
Nonetheless, I still had a great time. But guess what???
When I get back home, I’m going to practice and practice and get my game tight. We’re gonna have a rematch when I come back. She ain’t going to beat me like that again.
This time, I’ll be prepared.
SO … why do I bring all of this up?
When you start a business or anything new or major, you’re going to need people in your circle who can challenge you.
And that’s what Tish did — she challenged me.
Having the right people in your corner to challenge you makes you dream bigger, and it pushes you to do more than average.
Tish and I, along with another colleague of mine, Montina Portis, meet-up a few times a year to mastermind. We challenge each other. We hold each other accountable.
We toss ideas off each other. We give each other feedback.
That’s how we GROW. That’s how our businesses GROW.
My other friend, Jackie Wilson, he’s the one I can get raw with … He’s the one who doesn’t mind telling me things I might not want to hear … But need to know.
Together, we push each other to the maximum. We set BIG goals and check in regularly to make sure we’re each on task.
What about you? Who holds you accountable? Who tells you the truth about yourself and your ideas?
Sometimes, we can’t always believe our own ideas are great. We can’t always see past a certain point — we often need another set of eyes to make sure we’re on the right track — it’s easy to believe our own delusional ideas sometimes.
I want you to succeed in your life and in your business.
If you’ve been sitting on the fence about starting something new, or considering a major change, then I challenge you to take action today and do something about it.
Don’t just sit around daydreaming.
Do what I did and get out on there on the golf course and actually get your butt in the game.
I didn’t just daydream about giving her a beat down on that golf course — I was salivating at the mouth.
I actually tasted victory in my mouth and in my mind. And after all that daydreaming, I got out there and tried to do something about it.
Now it’s your turn… Start that biz today. Actually plan that new adventure you’ve been thinking about. Just make the decision to do whatever it is and DO IT.
Even if things don’t work out in your favor the first time out, you can at least correct course once you get going – that’s what I did after I got beat.
But if I never stepped out there, I’d never get better.
If you don’t step out there, you’ll never know the outcome.
One thing we do know for sure is if you do nothing, then NOTHING will happen.
I challenge you to do something about your dreams and your future. You can do this…
I’ve made a small fortune from a variety of online business models over the years … I’ve been able to support my family of 7 exclusively from these efforts.
I’ve put together a training that outlines how you can learn this model for yourself.
